It was the summer of 1987. I had never been on a prolonged trip with my Honda 550-four, besides the fact that I had bought it two years prior to this. The only place I had ever taken my motorcycle was to and from my job and around the town because of a lack of time and personal circumstances. But it was bright and early one Monday morning when my brother called on the phone to see if I would like to go on a prolonged road trip with him. How could I say no?
Just half-hour later, there he was at the door waiting for me to go. He was there looking delighted with himself, complete with leather gloves and a new pair of riding glasses covering his eyes. When I asked about his glasses I discovered that they had cost lots more than what I would have purchased them.
In turn, he warned me that riding with regular sunglasses was a bad idea; a statement which I ignored with all the smugness of a 22-year-old single guy who thought he knew everything.
Guess what? I was wrong.
Screaming down the highway at 65 mph without riding glasses was certainly an eye-opener. Or should I say, an “eye closer”~In fact, I should really say that it was a real ‘eye closer’~However, the fact is that it was more of an eye closer than an eye opener. It didn’t take long for me to realise that with regular sunglasses, the wind came over the rims and my eyes started to dry up. What’s more, even with the lenses in front of me I was still getting pummeled by bugs, dirt, and all of those stupid little pebbles.
About the 50th mile I was begging the biker gods for a place to get off the interstate so I could buy a pair of glasses.
By the end of that day I was the proud owner of a new pair of riding glasses. I made sure that anytime I was riding over 55mph, I had these riding glasses with me. A year or two later, I sold my motorcycle and made a point of advising the purchaser to purchase a great pair of riding glasses. I hope that he took my advice and didn’t find out the hard way; the way that I did.
